AVENUE Q
My goal for this lighting project was to create a very similar atmosphere to the nostalgia of Sesame Street. With Avenue Q subverting the initial notion of children's educational media, I wanted to emphasize the new adult themes but also keep the TV set like aesthetic of the original source material. A large inspiration for me was John Mulaney's Netflix special, The Lunch Bunch.

Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman quickly became a favorite in my eyes after this project. Zimmerman's highly visionary retelling of Ovid's classics allows for a great amount of imaginative lighting choices. For this project, there I accentuated the pool of water in the center of the scenery, which in this rendition, is actually just fabric. I wanted to create as much versatility with this caveat as possible, so I used scrollers and fixtures within the pool to allow for a variety of looks. I also added footlights to the platform to create tall shadows onto the cyc behind it. Overall, I aimed to highlight the grandness of these tales, and to showcase the sense of heightened reality.
